Huawei to roll out self-developed Harmony OS for smartphones next month, ending its reliance on Google’s Android
China’s Huawei announced to launch their own operating system for smartphones in early June 2021. It is a company’s biggest move to deal with US sanctions from 2019 which banned Huawei from access US phone technology. That included Google mobile services and Android applications.
This seems to be launched Harmony OS will be the first move into business areas that can’t be affected by sanction. However, it’s not clear that the launch will include a new smartphone. Huawei was the world’s largest smartphone maker. But now ranks 6th globally. In Huawei’s internal memo, they encouraged a more open-source approach to development and said it will look to overseas software experts as part of the pivot.
